No Popups

nuBuilder version 11.12.20 has been released and it no longer uses Popups.

The Tab Menu on Forms has changed and can now be moved and manipulated by changing the Style called .nuMenu under the Setup Tab (which builds a CSS Class).

The use of Frames will no longer be used as of the next release which will be out very soon.

While I'm quoting people, here is a comment made in our forum last night.

"I am so thrilled with nuBuilder. I have been using MS Access for 10 years. Then we switched to linux and I could not find a way to create front ends to my databases that would be similar to Access.

Learning Java was just too much. With Open Office Base I tore my hair out (although I like Libreoffice). But now with nuBuilder I could make an application in one weekend from scratch learning the ropes just with the excellent video tutorials. This is just awesome. "

Web Applications and therefore Application Builders are the future of business solutions.

What I mean is when you do a Google search you need to search for a full word (for good reason I know, BUT) if you want to find "Georgios Papadopoulos" in Google you need to type Georgios Papadopoulos, but in nuBuilder you could type eor dop.

And when searching in some other applications you also have to choose

I always chuckle when I see the claim "No programming required", when advertising an Application Builder.

How on earth can you automate any custom event or grab a certain set of data from a database without using something like IF or WHERE.

Some Application Builders have decided that they can improve on things like SQL, PHP and Javascript by creating there own "user friendlier" alternatives.

Maybe they don't consider their alternatives "programming".

Either way its something new to learn.

nuBuilder Primary Keys

Some have wondered why nuBuilder uses the Primary Key method it does (using php's uniqid() to create a string) and not Automatically Incremented Integers.

Here are some reasons:

If you rely on the database to tell you what the ID is going to be, you can never populate foreign keys on a child table without first creating the parent record. (generally that won't matter, but Murphy's Law will come up with a time when it does)
It is hard to create a table like contacts from two tables like employee and customer. Because both are likely to have the same Primary Keys (both probably have Primay Keys 1 and 2)
Creating a Primary Key from two other Primary Keys is harder with numbers. (123 and 45 gives the same result as 12 and 345)
When you use AutoIDs you need to go back to the database to get an answer you could have otherwise given it.

Essentially the more you automate a database, the less control a programmer has over it.

I think its because there often seems to be massive blowouts in the eventual cost of implementation.

Its fair to say when it comes to features needed and cost projections for those features, the customer and the consultant rarely start on the same page.

The customer has certain expectations and rarely explains them completely and the consultant assumes the bits the customer left out. BIG MISTAKE.

I have found the only way to get it right is by doing bits at a time.
A customer sometime doesn't know what they want until they see what they don't want.
They need to be shown something before both parties know for sure they understand each other.

Having a customer sign off on a massive deal might make the salesperson look like a hero.
But completing something small, that the customer is happy with, before moving on to the next part will develop a relationship that won't end in name calling.

Software Business Models

Wouldn't it be great if you could make something once and sell it a hundred times?

This is the basis of most software developers' business model.

Create one application for a hundred clients.
Write it once, sell it a hundred times (or rent it a hundred times - in the case of cloud applications).

This model, in itself, does not stop customisation for specific clients.

But like most applications there will eventually be upgrades, the problem with these upgrades is that they can only be applied to the standard application. If any customisation has been done, these new changes won't fit and therefore can't be upgraded.

For this reason software companies working with this model resist customising applications for their clients. Not because they don't want to help their clients but because it would mean they would need to change the way they do business.

The other main business model is..

Create one application for each client.
Include only what they want, and upgrade their application with the changes they want, only when they ask for them.

This is the model we use at nuSoftware.

In fact we go one step futher. Any code we write for you is yours, if we create an application for you, that you think you can resell, you are free to do so.

What could be more flexible than that?

Much of the software industry expects that it can charge thousands of dollars to develop custom software for you, then expects to retain ownership of that software for themselves, therefore allowing them to resell it to others (often competitors).

With a lot of software you buy, you pay for it in the form of licensing fees, either yearly, per user or both.

In either of these cases its very unlikely you'll get a copy of the code (the human readable script that is needed if you want to make changes).

This means you can end up paying for something someone else owns and paying for it multiple times.

That's not the way we work.

We charge by the hour and you get to own the finished product (along with the code). The only thing you don't own is the platform it is written on, nuBuilder, but that is free to use anyway. So you get to use nuBuilder along with your customised application whereever you want as many times as you want.

One more thing.

If you need changes to something we wrote for you or want something new, we are here to help. Or you could attempt it yourself using the free online help we provide on our web site.

We don't lock anyone into anything.

Rapid Prototyping

One of the the most important things for a software development company, when dealing with a new customer, is giving them an idea of how their new system will look.

It lets the customer know what to expect, but more importantly, it lets the software company know if they are on the right track.

The quicker this can be done the better. So having a tool that can do this fast is pretty handy. Visual Basic and MS Access have traditionally been this type of tool, but as I've tried to show earlier, for basic back office database applications nuBuilder is even better.

Problems with SaaS

There is a growing trend to rent software rather than buy it (Software as a Service).

It sounds like a good idea, you get to use software without paying for a server.

But what happens if you decide in the future, the rental you are paying is getting out of control (you may well start off paying a licence for 5 users and eventually require 10).
Now you want to take all that information and host it for yourself. You can't unless you can buy their software, good luck with that!

nuBuilder can be hosted on our server or anyone elses, it can be backed up to your local drive when ever you want and if you want to move hosting providers, all you need to do is install nuBuilder (which is free) and reload your backup!

This is good Risk Management.

I see a lot of things calling themselves Rapid Application Development (RAD) Tools.

Most of these seem to be tools for making any type of software application faster, much the same way creating a state of the art kitchen will allow any type of food to be prepared faster.

But what if you just want to make a sandwich?

A sandwich can have different ingredients and different flavoured sauces and can cater for any type of diet but essentially is a sandwich.

Making a sandwich is something Subway has perfected - they have the buns, the meat, the vegetables and the sauce all ready to go.
Ask for a Subway sandwich and chances are you'll have it in under 2 minutes. On the other hand go to a state of the art kitchen, where they can create anything and therefore make everything from scratch, and you could wait 2 hours for them to cook the exact same thing offered by Subway.

Most Rapid Application Development Tools are like the state-of-the-art kitchen.

The 2 Screen Model - Part 1 - The Search Screen

nuBuilder uses only two screens to do everything.

The Search Screen is used to...

Sort - By clicking a column heading.

Sorting helps you find the oldest date or the first invoice number etc. Clicking once sorts in descending order, clicking again sorts in ascending order.

Filter - By typing a string into the Search field.

Filtering can be done on any part of a word eg tch will find watch us grow.

It could also by be found by using wa gr, as leaving a space between strings will make the search look for each string.

Preceeding a string with a hyphen will exclude a string eg. -us.

Surrounding a string with quotes will allow for a phrase to be filtered eg. "h us g".

Select - By clicking a highlighted row.

Simply clicking a highlighted row will either take you to an edit screen or select a record for a lookup object.

Add - By clicking the Add button.

Clicking a highlighted row will take you to an edit screen of an empty record.

Quote vs Time and Materials

When it comes to writing custom software, there are two basic ways to have something developed.

Fixed Price Quote.
Where both parties agree on exactly what will be developed and how much it will cost.

Time and Materials.
Where both parties agree on exactly what will be developed and development is charged by the time the developer spends on a job.

From a customer's point of view obviously a Fixed Quote lets them know what they are going to be up for, which can be comforting.

The developer on the other hand, likes to know they are going to get paid for all the time they spend on a job. Because of this when a developer creates a Fixed Quote they generally pad it out to cover any unforeseen circumstances (including bugs).

This will generally make the cost of a Fixed Price Quote more expensive than Time and Materials.

There is one more very important factor in making the Fixed Price Quote more expensive and that has to do with testing. A major part of developing is testing and in a Quoted situation this function relies mainly on the developer as they are being paid to deliver a finished product.

In a Time and Materials situation the job of testing can be shared between developer and user and as the rate being charged by the developer is likely to be greater than the user, any time the user saves the developer the more they save on the project... and as this user will ultimately be one of the users, their testing is likely to be more efficient than a developer who may be unaware of a normal user's thought processes.

In our experience at nuSoftware, we have found that a combination of Fixed Price Quoting and Time and Materials seems to work well.
Fixed Price Quoting, when we are dealing with a new customer (giving them peace of mind) and Time and Materials, once they have become comfortable with the way we do things.

Its important to keep in mind that at nuSoftware we develop all our applications in nuBuilder (our open source product available to anyone).
Which means if we develop something for you, your own IT people or other companies that know or are willing to learn nuBuilder (via our Wiki and especially our Video Tutorials), can take over from us anytime you want, so no one has you by the proverbials.

Popups

As anyone who has used nuBuilder would know, it uses popups.

In business applications (which nuBuilder is designed to create) there is a genuine need to have more than one screen open at a time.
This allows the user to have a customer screen and an invoice screen open, for example, allowing information on both screens to be compared.

Currently, when you open an invoice screen while there is another invoice screen already open, it will replace the old with the new rather than opening another window.

It has been suggested by some of the customers that we have developed nuBuilder applications over the years, that it would be handy to have 2 invoices open at the same time, so they can be compared.

There are a lot of reasons for having multiple screens open rather than using the traditional way browsers have been used in the past.

Now back when we started developing nuBuilder, monitors and resolutions were quite a bit different (much closer to the 8 inch laptops that are around today) and we started using popups to open these separate windows because it gave us more real estate in the browser and to cater for the 8 inch laptop brigade we need to keep it this way.

Alternatively, with the new generation of browsers, you can always set the popups to tab browsing!

One misconception about nuBuilder

Just because nuBuilder works in a web-browser doesn't mean its for the whole world to see. In fact its not, hence the required user name and password access.

It is meant to be a business tool for developing "back office" business applications. Applications like accounting systems or CRMs, systems that require secure, logged in data-entry not anonymous surfing.

A nuBuilder screen is not there to impress the user, its there to help them enter data and make sure its validated properly.

nuBuilder Simplicity

Often we get suggestions about what could be added to nuBuilder.
The problem is every time we add something, nuBuilder gets a bit more complex.

Take something like creating a mask for a Text Object, eg for phone numbers '(__) ___ _____'.

Now there are times that this might come in handy, BUT if we add a field that allows a mask, it means everytime a developer adds a new Text Object they have to a least ask the question,"Do I apply a mask" and 99 percent of the time the answer will be no.

This means we would have added complexity (even though quite small) all for a feature rarely used. Now times that by all the other suggestions that have some merit and you have a pretty complicated group of fields that may need addressing just to create a simple Text Object.

A book I've been reading called Made to Stick calls this "feature creep" and uses a TV's remote control as an analogy of what happens when you add too many features to something that should be simple to use (page 48).

Now having said all that there are still 3 ways that can be used to create a mask, for example, in nuBuilder.

Write a bit of Javascript. (for a once off solution)

Write a javascript function that starts with nu eg. 'nuMask' and send it to us to be included in the next version of nuBuilder, so everyone can use it.(This simplifies the making of masks that everyone can use but doesn't add an extra option to be answered everytime a Text Object is created.)

Create a nuBuilder Plug-in. (That does add the field to the text object tab, to be used by anyone who does think it would be a good idea.)

Now, we are not saying that nuBuilder is not going to be improved, we still have a lot of ideas, but considering that any additions to its interface would mean extra complexity for users (not to mention changes to our video tutorials) our intent is to keep this as simple as possible.

Easy Development Environment

nuBuilder has its own development environment. There is not an IDE for development and another process for launching what you have created.

It has a built in Form Builder and a Report Builder, and any extra customisation can be made inside these 2 using PHP, SQL and Javascript.

Anyone familiar with these 3 and any background in application development, can be up and running, making something useful in a couple of hours.

Whether its the graphics used or its custom code, its layout or its colour scheme.
It is all held in tables in its database.
This means the developer does not need any FTP access to the web server and more importantly backing up your applications couldn't be easier.
One backup of the database and you've got everything!

I've looked around on the web and can't see a product that comes close to nuBuilder!

Either it only caters for simple flat table databases or it uses a separate piece of software to develop an application.

With nuBuilder you can create a complex accounting system without even having access to the harddrive of the computer you are using.

It even has a report writer that is written in javascript and runs in the browser!

If anyone knows of another product that does all that, please let me know.

We host nuBuilder's web servers in a place where part of the security requires your hand scanned before allowing entry, that's the phyical security bit.
Its all SSL secured and each user needs a username and password, thats the electronic security bit.

But because nuBuilder is accessed from the web and not your own hard drive it means there are even more reasons that make nuBuilder a secure way of doing things.

People love stealing laptops and with data sitting on your own laptops it means they get all that too, as well as you losing all that.

The worst that can happen if they get a laptop that uses nuBuilder is they get the laptop and if you really want to be sure thay can't get to your nuBuilder application you can change your password!

We have 2 versions of nuBuilder, both called nuBuilder but one is obviously nuer.

Our newer version stores all data, layout and custom code in the same database so that backing up the database means backing up everything!

Including reports.

This is the future for web applications.

Not always the right people write software.

But the people that use nuBuilder are the right people to write software.

There are 7 of us currently but we have big plans!

This is the first post for nuBuilder's blog.

My name is Steven Copley and I run a company called nuSoftware, in Adelaide, Australia.

We write software that writes software and we also use this software (the one that we write) to write software.

Otherwise it would simply be software that isn't used to write software.

Sounds obvious, I know but I just wanted everyone to know that we actually use what we make so that others can make use of what we make.
